If you haven’t read the Book, how can you say you believe it?
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
begotten from the Father before all ages,
God from God,
Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made;
of the same essence as the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven;
he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,
and was made human.
He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered and was buried.
The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again with glory
to judge the living and the dead.
His kingdom will never end.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life.
He proceeds from the Father and the Son,
and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.
He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,
and to life in the world to come. Amen.
My testimony
I am the only child of single mother. This was back in the 80s. Mom took me to church. Eventually I started listening to the priest. I believed, and was baptized (although I was immersed in water during my college years).
I drew badly on the genetic lottery and have a mental illness. However, with a holistic approach, through a Christian walk and medicine I live a normal life, where many in my situation do not.
My story continues to unfold. It is essential for people to share their testimonies. Particularly at their local church. If we ‘overcome by the word of our testimonies and the Blood of the Lamb’ then we ought to share our testimonies to whomever will listen. Maybe every week during the service we should make time for someone (preferably two or three) to share a testimony of what Jesus has done in our lives.
A layman’s take
We used to read the Bible in school. You had a class, in a public school. You were graded based on your understanding, knowledge, and ability to articulate what was in the Old and New Testament. I think it’s time we had a cram session, don’t you? And then let’s read it every day for the rest of our lives. All of it. Even Numbers. Even Song of Solomon. And then, let’s apply it to our lives. Daily. Hourly, if needed.
